My Weekend Picks – Weekend of 3/12

Another weekend already! And so much exciting stuff happening (as always).

My Milwaukee picks for this weekend (I have lots – sorry!):

Escanaba in Love at the Sunset Playhouse – Yesterday was the Sunset’s 50th Birthday (Happy Birthday, Sunset) and the currently running show is a great example of the fun they have. It is a prequel to Escanaba in Da Moonlight and a silly romantic comedy about some crazy “yoopers” up at deer camp. A fun night out.

Radio Golf at the Milwaukee Rep – Steimke. This is the final installment of August Wilson’s 10-play chronicle of African American life in the 20th Century. The director, Timothy Douglas, has done a number of well-received plays ( Trouble in Mind, Gem of the Ocean, The Night is a Child) at the Rep and August Wilson has a tremendously earthy style that I enjoy. Definitely worth seeing.

A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine at the Skylight Opera Theatre. This is a “double-feature” – the first act features great film songs for Hollywood’s heyday and the second act is a Marx brothers-style take on Chekhov’s The Bear. It is like getting two shows for one and is what the Skylight does best. And – for the first two blog-readers to email me at kgodfrey(at)footlights.com, I have a voucher for two free tickets to see this show.

Missa Lorca with the Bel Canto Chorus. This is a United States Premiere and if you’ve never seen Bel Canto, this Sunday afternoon-only performance is a great time to check them out.

Also – if you haven’t seen Duet for One at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre or Stuck at In Tandem Theatre, they both close this weekend… so don’t miss your chance!

My Chicago pick:

The Illusion at Court Theatre – I like Court a lot – I think they do really interesting and consistently excellent work. I have been reading their blog throughout the rehearsal process and though admittedly I am still not 100% sure of the plot of the show, I am intrigued by their use of space, the allegory of the storyline and it seems to be a very well-thought-out play.

My Madison pick:

To be honest, both of the shows opening in the Overture Center this weekend ( Cinderella at the Madison Ballet and Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway at the Overture Center) sound like great picks to me. If you are new to ballet – check out Cinderella. I love Cinderella as a ballet, especially for new ballet goers as the story is already so familiar you can simply enjoy the dance and music without getting tied up into following a storyline.
