Experimental instrumental band MONO might not be as well-known as similar bands like Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Ros, but the Japanese quartet are every bit as expressive with their epic soundscapes and a bona fide force in the post rock genre.
Led by lead guitarist and composer Takaakira Goto, the band have released five full-length albums, including 2009's Hymn to the Immortal Wind, since their formation in Tokyo in 1999. The band composes their sweeping, guitar-based pieces to express various emotions, such as joy or sorrow, rather than simply making noise that sounds good.
While MONO name checks influential bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, they also draw on inspiration from the likes of Italian film score composer Ennio Morricone, classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven and Danish director Lars von Trier to express various emotions without using vocals. The band have also expanded their sound on their recent albums, working with famed producer Steve Albini and incorporated the use of a 28-piece chamber orchestra to substantiate their incredibly lush soundscapes. Their live sonic offerings have made the band a considerably substantial draw across the globe, especially across Asia and Europe.
